Pomander Balls

One of the joys of the winter and holiday seasons are the sight and smells that help brighten up the dark winter days. Originally, the scent of cloves and oranges were supposed to ward off evil spirts and keep the occupants healthy. Pomander balls were created and were a tradition dating back before 14th century. These decorations remind us of a simple craft that adds so much atmosphere.

Simple poke cloves, which are a natural preserving agent, into an orange. You can create any design you can imagine. This is a great craft for kids to do as well.  The cloves help draw out the juice and dry out the orange.  The more cloves used, the less area an orange has to mold. If kept in a bowl the oranges may start to mold within a few days. However,  you can help them dry out  by hanging them. Once they are dry, their aroma really starts to come out.  A faster way to dry out your pomander ball, extending there life for years, is in an oven. Bake at 150F for several hours. They are done when they feel light in weight and dried up. Go Craft That Mess  into something that smells and look beautiful!
